Just like all other CDNs and hosting providers, Lightcast has to charge for used bandwidth. Since Lightcast not only provides CDN solutions, but also integration tools such as embeddable players, the bandwidth consumption is much less than with regular CDNs for which you usually have to develop your own video players. Only OVPs provide such integration tools.  Regular CDNs are not taking any precaution to throttle the preloading of videos through players they provide. Lightcast does do that to the maximum extend each viewing device allows. Lightcast would not have to do that, but rather use the standard http download streaming and let clients use standard video players without preload throttling, in which case the entire video would download within seconds. That is how most CDNs and OVPs are working and make most of their money. While we throttle the preloading to the maximum extend per each viewing device's boundaries, the streaming protocols of certain mobile devices (especially iOS and Android devices) foresee the preloading of a larger percentage of the video, thus occurring higher overheads. No one, but the manufacturers and authors of operating systems for mobile devices, is able to control that, but you can be sure that we are controlling the preloading on these devices to the maximum extend possible.
