Is there a device limitation in place for subscriptions?

Lightcast doesn't offer device limitations for subscriptions. We recommend publishers to utilize the Lightcast DRM with token security (DRM Level 2) rather than limiting device numbers, due to the following reasons:

- Device limitations can still be abused by those who know how to do it. The rest of the viewership may never even considering the possibility to abuse device limitations, thus never attempting it. The idea of trying to use an unnecessarily high number of devices is a concept of experts, something the vast majority never considers, while experts who intend to resell a single subscription account, have the capabilities to abuse server-side device limitations anyway.

- Device limitations frustrate regular, honest users which can result in loss of subscription revenue.

- Device limitations are not 100% reliable and can malfunction, adding to user frustration.

- Device limitations have been increased, and even lifted, over the past years continuously, as the number of devices in households increases year over year. Subscribers do consider all of their devices within their household as legitimate screens through which they expect to access their subscription, even if that includes five, seven or ten devices, or more.

- Not all platforms support it any longer.

- It comes at a significant cost.

For these reasons we encourage publishers to secure contents against abuse, using Lightcast security settings  such as the DRM services included in larger Lightcast Packages, but not opt for device limitation, which is also not a default service.
