Continuing last week's tip on how to manage and utilize your storage, this week we would like to give you a few tips on how to get the most out of your transcoding!
General Info:
The total size of all transcoded renditions is about three times larger than your uploaded original file. The reason is simply that our Premium Transcoding Service has to create up to ten different renditions from each video upload, in order to ensure instant maximum device compatibility for multi-platform / OTT publishing and viewer-friendly, bitrate-adaptive delivery.
Optimizing Transcoding Usage:
In our previous Tip of the Week we talked about optimizing the file size/quality ratio of your video files before uploading them to your Media Cloud. This helps reduce your storage as well as your transcoding usage. Another way to optimize both storage and transcoding usage while keeping the quality of your videos high, is to upload videos with shorter durations (longer videos produce larger file sizes). Also, as referenced recently in the "Storage Usage” Tip of the Week, optimizing the export/codec settings in your editing suite and or compression software will allow you to better optimize the amount of transcoding each of your video files use when being uploaded to your Media Cloud.
Increasing Transcoding Usage:
And if you are ever in need of additional transcoding, you can add more transcoding to your existing package by purchasing a monthly transcoding subscription or by purchasing prepaid transcoding. You also have the option of upgrading to a larger Lightcast package that has more transcoding included (see a comparison of packages at https://www.lightcast.com/packages/).
